The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has a variety training and development opportunities for everyone with aim to create, sustain, and retain the next generation of FECM employees.  Click on the drop down next to each opportunity to find out more.

    OVERVIEW

    The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program is a 10-week summer research internship for undergraduate and graduate students in STEM majors. Participants complete a cutting-edge research project at one of the Department’s National Laboratories or DOE Headquarters in support of the Department’s mission of limiting the environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero emissions.

    ELIGIBILITY

    • Be a U.S. Citizen
    • Be at least age 18
    • Have a minimum 2.8 GPA
    • Be enrolled full-time in a STEM degree program at the associate's, bachelor’s or master’s level at the time of application.  
    • Must be a college sophomore or higher

    STIPEND

    • Undergraduate students: $7,500 for 10-weeks
    • Master’s students: $8,500 for 10-weeks

  • OVERVIEW

    • Educating and training the next generation of engineers and scientists
    • Supporting novel, early-stage research at U.S. colleges and universities
    • Increasing research & development opportunities for underrepresented and structurally marginalized communities
    • Ensuring that students are being equipped with cutting-edge, translatable skillsets that will allow them to contribute to the U.S. workforce and greater economy over the course of a longstanding and enduring career

    FUNDING

    • Nationwide, competitive solicitation
    • Projects pertain to early-stage R&D and student and workforce development.
    • Projects awarded as grants, with a typical duration of 2-3 years.
    • Award sizes vary depending on the year and area of interest. In recent years, awards have ranged from $250k-1.5M.

  • OVERVIEW

    The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science, Technology and Policy Program is designed to provide opportunities for postgraduates and faculty to participate in programs, projects, and activities at the Department. Fellows will receive hands-on experience that provides an understanding of the mission, operations, and culture of the DOE. As a result, fellows will gain deep insight into the federal government's role in the creation and implementation of energy technology policies; apply their scientific, policy, and technical knowledge to the development of solutions to issues of importance to the DOE and continue their education and involvement in areas that support the DOE mission either in a technical or policy-related role.

    ELIGIBILITY

    • Be a U.S. Citizen
    • Be at least age 18
    • Candidates must fall into one of the following categories: Student, Postgraduate or Faculty.  Additional information on these categories can be found on the application page.

    STIPEND

    A stipend will be based on appointment level and commensurate with qualifications:

    • Bachelor's or Associate Students: $30,000+
    • Bachelor’s Degree | Master’s Students or Degree | Doctoral Students: $50,000+
    • Doctoral Degree: $75,000+
    • Faculty: $100,000+

  • Research Experience Carbon Sequestration Logo

    OVERVIEW

    The 20th annual Research Experience in Carbon Sequestration (RECS) Program will be held on July 21-30, 2024 in Colorado and Wyoming.

    Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, RECS is an annual intensive program that combines classroom instruction with group exercises, site visits, communications training, and hands-on field activities covering science, technology, policy, and business topics associated with carbon capture, utilization, and storage deployment.

    RECS is the premier carbon capture, utilization, and storage education and training experience and career network for graduate students and early career professionals in the United States.

    ELIGIBILITY

    • Early career professionals, Ph.D. or graduate students
    • Geoscience, engineering, physics, climate science, science communications, and related business and social science fields
    • International and domestic applicants are eligible to apply
