CALiPER Archives

CALiPER archive reports focus on specific lighting product types and design scenarios, offering comparative analysis that puts LED performance in context relative to the overall lighting industry and benchmark technologies at the time.

LED Color-Tunable Products

This study investigated photometric testing procedures for white-tunable LED luminaires and summarized the key features of those products. Goals of the study included understanding the amount of testing required to characterize a white-tunable product, and documenting the performance of available color-tunable luminaires that are intended for architectural lighting. The first report addendum analyzes the effect of testing at fewer color control points compared to the baseline used in the initial analysis. The second addendum provides testing results for eight additional luminaires.

Industrial Luminaires

This study evaluated the performance of several LED lighting products with claimed efficacies near or exceeding 200 lm/W. The purpose was to validate the claimed efficacy, determine the features or characteristics the products had in common, and identify any performance tradeoffs in luminaires reaching this very high efficacy level. All of the products were industrial luminaires with CCTs of 5000K, and all but one had exposed LED emitters. Overall, photometric testing yielded values reasonably close to manufacturers’ claims, yet evaluations by knowledgeable observers highlighted some key considerations – such as the importance of visual comfort.

OLED Luminaires

This study documents an investigation of OLED luminaires and summarizes key features of those products. In addition to photometric testing of four commercial products in independent laboratories, PNNL examined many of the products through teardown testing (disassemblies to identify parts and functionality) in PNNL laboratories. Results of these tests as well as results of stress testing of several OLED luminaires at RTI International are included. In addition, a report supplement contains testing results of two additional OLED luminaires acquired as part of a GATEWAY evaluation.
