Observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month

Thursday October 1, 2020

Hello, I’m Secretary Dan Brouillette, and it’s a pleasure and honor to join you at our annual observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

It’s a great opportunity to come together to celebrate the many achievements of Hispanic Americans, and their countless contributions to building, shaping, and defending our nation.

It’s appropriate we do so, for as President Trump noted in his Proclamation celebrating this month, “Hispanic Americans embody the best of our American values, including a commitment to faith, family and country.”

Members of the Hispanic and Latino community also play a vital role in our economy and our workforce, and they have fully embraced our nation’s confidence in growth and opportunity.

As the annual State of Latino Entrepreneurship Report from Stanford University pointed out, “The number of Latino business owners in the United States continues to grow significantly faster than the U.S. average.”

And as Secretary, I’ve seen the immeasurable contributions that members of the Hispanic and Latino community have made to our Department, and their dedication to our mission.

That’s why we’re committed to promoting opportunity at DOE, and to encouraging the involvement of Hispanic-owned businesses in energy. We’re also playing a leading role in promoting STEM education in the Hispanic community.

We’re doing all of that, and much more, in order to ensure that Hispanics are engaged and invested here at DOE.

What’s more, by 2060 Hispanics are expected to make up 30 percent of our population, and will continue to be an essential part of keeping us a strong, vibrant, and thriving nation.

The theme of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month is “Be proud of your past and embrace the future.”

So it could not be more fitting that we take time to gather today, and express our gratitude to the members of America’s Hispanic and Latino community, for their vast and lasting contributions to making our country safe, prosperous, and free.

Thank you.
