November 30, 2011Domestic Water to River Water Cross Connection for the Biomass Cogeneration Facility
CX(s) Applied: B2.5
Date: 11/30/2011
Location(s): South Carolina
Offices(s): Savannah River Operations Office
Operation of the Biomass Cogeneration Facility (BCF) requires process water to produce steam and cooling tower makeup and for backwash and regeneration cycles associated with the plant's water treatment system. Routine BCF operation uses raw river water pumped from the 681-3G Pump House into the R-Normal Cooling Water Pipe Line, then to the BCF through a dedicated 12-inch supply line. Contingency planning to ensure a safe and reliable uninterrupted supply of feed water requires a back-up water supply should there be a failure in the river water supply pathway. This activity will construct a cross connection between the 10-inch domestic water line and the 12-inch river water supply line to provide water to the BCF in the event the river water supply fails. Backflow prevention devices and valves will be installed to avoid cross contamination of the domestic water supply.
