The Department of Energy - Savannah River (DOE-SR) are in the initial stages of negotiations with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to send a large portion of the Savannah River Site (SRS) heavy water inventory to AECL in Canada. AECL will use the heavy water in Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactors sometime in the future. The current plans are for AECL to cover the costs of preparing the water to ship, new drums as needed and shipping costs to Canada. Since the heavy water is no longer a needed asset with the US government, Department of Energy would give the heavy water to AECL for no costs. These are the major points of the agreement at this very early stage of the negotiations.
