Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funding. The Department of Energy funds will be used to install solar powered light-emitting diode (LED) street lights for Phase IA of the Downtown Greenway. The Downtown Greenway is a proposed 4.2 mile walking and biking trail that will loop around downtown Greensboro. Theproposed area for installation of the solar Lighting is approximately 1500 feet along Freeman Mill Rd between West Lee Street and Spring Garden Street. This area lies between several major streets and will cross railroad tracks. The surrounding area is mainly developed and includes several commercial buildings. The solar LED streetlights will be installed in place of grid-tied street lights with traditional lamp technologies. The solar lights will require only installation of poles (the planned traditional light fixtures that were to be installed would have resulted in more excavation and trenching to run electric lines), and no adverse environmental impacts are anticipated to occur.
