The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will use $1,637,750 in Recovery Act funds to establish a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic recycling facility at the MRC Polymer plant located at 3535 West 31st Street in Chicago. The grant will fund equipment and material purchases to allow the facility to recycle 35 million pounds (17,500 tons) of PET bottles annually. The MRC recycling facility intends to accept bales of whole PET bottles from municipal recycling facilities and upgrade them to plastic pellets that will compete with virgin plastic resin. The equipment will be installed inside an existing MRC building that was constructed six years ago for recycling operations.
