This activity involves the distillation of chloride, fluoride, and hydroxide salts under vacuum. A sample boat containing feed material will be placed into the salt distillation unit. One end of the unit will be placed in a tube furnace. A vacuum will be pulled on the system and the tube furnace heated. The volatile salts will evaporate from the heated zone and collect in the cooled zone of the test apparatus outside of the furnace. The system will be operated essentially as a closed system.
