Savannah River National Laboratory and Engineering Developmental Laboratory (EDL) in particular have been tasked to perform a set of small scale (Environmental Stress Screening and 2 centimeters) and full-scale V-5 (Strip Bank) and V-10 (Extraction Bank) contactor tests with new solvent being developed for the Extraction and Strip operations in the Actinide Removal Process (ARP)/Modular Caustic Side Solvent Extraction Unit (MCU). The Next Generation Solvent (NGS) is comprised of four components: 0.050 Moles MaxCalix (Extractant), 0.50 Moles Cesium-7SB (Modifier), 0.003 Moles guanidine -LIX-79, with the balance Isopar L (approximately 70 percent weight). The strip acid will be changed from dilute nitric acid (0.001 Moles) to a dilute boric acid stream (0.01 Moles). EDL will also perform coalescer testing using the existing test housing supplied by Savannah River Remediation. EDL will complete cesium mass transfer testing on 5.6 Moles Simulant Salt Solution spiked with cesium nitrate to a Cesium concentration of about 79 milligrams per liter. (Prior to the Cesium mass transfer testing, the system will be scrubbed using a 0.025 Moles sodium hydroxide solution.) Using the same 5.6 Moles Simulant Salt Solution, EDL will perform a larger scale mixing and sorption demonstration using modified Monosodium Titanate (mMST). The settling and mixing characteristics of mMST in the 5.6 Moles simulant salt solution will be evaluated by EDL.
