The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) proposes to construct a salt storage facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) located in Boulder, Colorado.

The proposed project would result in a concrete storage facility located to the west of the DERFT and existing photovoltaic array to store salt for snow melt. Approximately 0.08 acres would be graded and cleared. A 30′ x 30′ x 8″ concrete slab would be constructed, and the storage facility would be built on the slab. A 3250 square foot area would be paved with asphalt that is seven inches deep to facilitate truck movement. The storage facility structure would be a 30′ x 30′ x 5′ concrete walled enclosure that is open on the southeast side for truck access. The structure would be covered with a tarp, and a roof would be constructed in the future. Concrete-filled, steel bollards would be installed at the southeast and northeast position of the building for protection.
