The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide funding to United Technology Research Center (UTRC) to develop and demonstrate advanced membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) for polymer-electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Specifically, within the MEA, the low platinum group metal catalyst cathode would be designed to perform with specifications beyond the current state-of-the-art.

All proposed activities would occur in dedicated laboratory or manufacturing facilities. The testing of small PEFCs would occur at UTRC in East Hartford, CT. The advanced MEAs would be fabricated by Ion Power in New Castle, DE. Advanced catalysts would be fabricated by the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, AR. No major facility modifications are required since this project would utilize existing equipment and facilities. Minor modifications to testing and/or material fabrication apparatus may be required.
