Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for New Energy Conservation Standards for Walk-in Coolers and Walk-in Freezers

In this NOPR, DOE is proposing to replace the six vacated energy conservation standards from the 2014 Final Rule for walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration systems with seven new conservation standards. The refrigeration systems for which new conservation standards are being proposed are defined as indoor and outdoor, low-temperature, dedicated condensing systems and both medium- and low-temperature multiplex refrigeration systems. The proposed rule would establish energy conservation standards for these seven equipment classes of walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration systems based on capacity. The proposed standards will be in addition to those standards that DOE has already promulgated for dedicated condensing, medium temperature, indoor and outdoor refrigeration systems. These proposed standards, if adopted, would apply to all products listed in Table I.1 of the NOPR and manufactured in, or imported into, the United States on or after three years after the publication date of any final rule establishing energy conservation standards for walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration systems.
