The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to Calnetix Technologies LLC to develop a medium-voltage motor and variable-speed drive (VSD) that will demonstrate the commercial viability of wide band gap power electronics for use with megawatt-class motors.
Activities associated with the proposed project include the design, development, fabrication and testing of a medium-voltage, megawatt (MW) VSD and high-speed, high-power motor at Calnetix’s facility in Cerritos, CA, Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, FL and Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. All research and development activities would take place in existing facilities designed for this type of research; therefore, no modifications, new permits, additional licenses and/or authorizations would be necessary.
