The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to the Indiana Office of Energy Development to reduce the state’s carbon-footprint and to off-set natural gas usage at the Logansport Juvenile Correctional Facility by installing a solar thermal hot water heating system.
Activities associated with the proposed project would include the installation of a solar thermal hot water heating system atop the existing Logansport Juvenile Correctional Facility Treatment Building in Logansport, IN. This system would be comprised of 20 solar thermal collectors mounted on 45 degree racks as well as the associated air vents, 3-way valves, expansion tanks, controllers and heat exchangers and piping. No ground disturbance would be required for this installation. There is one building in the vicinity of the proposed project that is eligible for listing on the National Historic Register. The SHPO has been consulted and determined that there would not be any alterations to the characteristics of the eligible building that qualify it for inclusion in or eligibility for the National Register. No change in the use, mission or operation of existing facilities would arise out of this effort. The facility has all applicable permits in place, and would not need additional permits for the proposed activities. No adverse impacts to sensitive resources are expected as a result of the proposed project.
