This Third Amended Determination follows the approval of additional funding, extended period of performance, change of project location, and new project milestones to support the project team's small-scale research and development activities to enable microbial production of methanol from methane feedstock, in progress under the Optimized Flexible Fuels using Grid-free Reactors with Intermittent Delivery (OFF GRID, formerly GREENWELLS) Program. Specifically, the project team will (1) expand, test, and validate the production rate of methanol in an expanded reactor system, (2) design, fabricate, and assemble a larger-scale reactor system, (3) test and validate reactor outputs and operational parameters to meet performance metrics, (5) design full-scale reactor and implementation plan, and (6) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for next phase of development. If successful, this project would enable sustainable production of methanol fuel, ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy sources, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
