January 25, 2024The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) plans to deactivate, demolish, and disposition ancillary structure C-301 at the Paducah Site that supported the former uranium enrichment facilities and is aging and/or deteriorated, and no longer needed.
This structure is considered to be ancillary facilities for general industrial support, such as training, and/or support facilities. This structure does not include process facilities. C-301 was operated as a fire training facility, and was also used for trash sorting then storage of excess equipment. Deactivation activities in preparation for demolition will include characterization, if needed, and removal of any potentially hazardous items that may be present, such as oils, asbestos, light bulbs, thermostats, and cleaning supplies. Materials that can be reused or recycled will be removed prior to or during demolition. Deactivation activities will also include disconnection of utilities by air gapping; rerouting of utilities as necessary to bypass the facility to be demolished and allow for continuation of existing plant operations, where required. The structure will be closed and decontaminated, as necessary and practicable, prior to demolition. All removed equipment, material, waste, and debris will be managed in accordance with the receiving facilities’ waste acceptance criteria.
