The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to SMASH Solar, Inc. to develop a solar installation system design that will reduce the complexity and skill requirements of solar installation, allowing any licensed contractor to install a solar array with minimal training. A previous NEPA Determination (GFO-0006693-001; CX A9, B3.6; 09/04/2014) reviewed all activities excluding subtask 4.4 (Product Installation Documentation). This NEPA Determination is to review the remaining project activities in subtask 4.4.
Completed project activities involved product development and pilot-scale manufacturing of a snap-together, module-integrated PV mounting system prototype. Subtask 4.4 would involve the design, development, and release of documentation describing the manufacturer’s installation process. The documentation would use media such as video, photos, mobile applications, narrative, animation or software to support the accurate and reliable installation of the SMASHmount system. The proposed activities would take place at the SMASH Solar laboratories in Richmond, CA in addition to the private and residential locations of existing customers. Documentation work would use no physical materials beyond basic office supplies, multimedia devices, and software.
