The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to the Indiana Office of Energy Development to reduce the state’s carbon-footprint and lower operating costs at Minnich Poultry by installing and utilizing solar thermal collectors that will pre-heat the water used for washing eggs before they are packaged.

Activities associated with the proposed project would include the installation of a 375,000 Btu/hr solar thermal water heating system atop a newly constructed building at Minnich Poultry in Portland, IN. This system would be comprised of 15 SunQuest 250 solar thermal collectors mounted on 45 degree racks as well as the associated air vents, 3-way valves, expansion tanks, controllers and heat exchangers and piping. No ground disturbance would be required for this installation and no historic locations would be affected; therefore, no adverse impacts to sensitive resources are expected as a result of the proposed project. No change in the use, mission or operation of existing facilities would arise out of this effort. The facility has all applicable permits in place, and would not need additional permits for the proposed activities.
