This activity will involve heavy mineral separation to separate heavier minerals (minerals with high specific gravity) from lighter minerals by using "heavy liquids" (e.g., lithium tungstate, sodium tungstate). Lighter minerals like quartz, plagioclase and clay minerals float to the top of the liquid while heavier minerals like zircon, apatite, monazite, sphene and iron-coated quartz grains sink to the bottom.
