Personnel will prepare synthetic solutions representing the expected composition of the High Aluminum (Al) per Low Uranium (U) used nuclear fuel (UNF) solution to evaluate the precipitation of Uranium and Gadolinium (Gd) during neutralization with 50 percent weight sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The nominal composition of the solutions will be 0.002 Moles A(M) Mercury (Hg), 1.0 grams per Liter (g/L) U, 2.0 M Al, 1.0 g/L Gd, and 0.5 - 1.5 M Nitric Acid (HNO3). A minimum of four precipitations/neutralizations will be performed for each acid concentration. The acidic solution will be neutralized to the pH where the first solids precipitate and do not redissolve, expected to be at a pH of approximately 4.5; to pH 7; to 0.8 M excess hydroxide; and to 1.2 M excess hydroxide.
