DOE Announces Second Round of Chain Reaction Innovations Entrepreneurial Research Fellows

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), announced the second cohort of innovators to join Chain Reaction Innovations, the Midwest region’s first entrepreneurial research and development program based at a DOE national laboratory. Six innovators were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants as part of the announcement and will begin work at ANL in May 2018.

Find out how the six new entrepreneurial research fellows plan to transform their breakthrough ideas into U.S.-based companies.

Secretary of Energy Rick Perry Announces $1.8 Billion Initiative for New Supercomputers

U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry recently announced a Request for Proposals (RFP), potentially worth up to $1.8 billion, for the development of at least two new exascale supercomputers to be deployed at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories between 2021 and 2023.

This RFP calls for a system to be deployed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and for another placement at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California.

DOE Seeks Feedback on the Use of Challenges and Prize Competitions to Address Critical Water Issues

The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking feedback on key barriers that may prevent long-term access to low-cost water supplies that could be best addressed through challenges and prize competitions. Challenges and prize competitions rely on competitive structures to drive innovation among a broad set of participants and usually offer financial and/or other rewards to winners and finalists. This Request for Information (RFI) was first released in conjunction with a roundtable discussionled by Energy Secretary Rick Perry on the use of federal prizes and challenges to drive innovation, particularly when it comes to critical water issues. DOE may use the information provided through this RFI to develop challenges and prize competitions to address these key water issues.

Responses to this RFI must be submitted electronically to WaterPrizeRFI@ee.doe.gov no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on May 14, 2018.

Join AMO at the Industrial Energy Technology Conference – June 12-14

In June, the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) will participate in the Industrial Energy Technology Conference (IETC), a national conference that convenes technical experts, program staff, and energy managers from manufacturing companies to share best practices on industrial energy technologies, energy management strategies, and programs.

This year’s attendees will have the opportunity to hear from AMO Director, Dr. Rob Ivester, on his vision for AMO’s practice areas going forward, including research, consortiums, and technical partnerships. Additionally, the Better Plants program will have a booth at the expo to discuss the innovative technologies being developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, as well as new program resources available to the manufacturing sector.

Learn more about AMO’s role at IETC. Registration information will be available shortly. Check the website for up-to-date information.

AMO’s IACMI Develops First Park Bench with Repurposed Aerospace Grade Carbon Fiber

In collaboration with the Composite Recycling Technology Center (CRTC), the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) created the world’s first park bench made from recycled aerospace grade carbon fiber. These lightweight but extremely strong benches were designed specifically for an outdoor setting and are durable and rot-proof, allowing them to look like new for years to come.

The City of Port Angeles, Washington, will be the first to purchase these benches to replace all of its wooden benches in public parks through a new Adopt-A-Bench program.
