Trends and obstacles confronting greater contribution from generation resources. Keeping The Lights On In the New World.

The purpose of this report is to provide guidance to the DOE with respect to establishment of a roadmap for energy storage in the US grid and the anticipated impact to plug-in electrical vehicles. The report addresses recommendations for a five-year plan to help insure that the US maintains a leadership position with regard to energy storage competitiveness and manufacturing.

Utilities in many states have been implementing energy efficiency and load management programs (collectively called demand-side resources), some for more than two decades. According to one source, U.S. electric utilities spent $14.7 billion on DSM programs between 1989 and 1999, an average of $1.3 billion per year.
