The Clean Cities Alternative Fuel Price Report lists the retail price of vehicle fuels reported in gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE). In 2019, the nationwide average retail price of compressed natural gas (CNG) was the lowest of all the major vehicle fuels, at $2.21/GGE. However, fleets, in particular those operating on propane, can often obtain significantly lower fuel prices by entering into contracts directly with local fuel suppliers, instead of purchasing fuel at retail.

Average vehicle fuel prices in 2019. Propane has the highest prices at $3.91 and CNG has the lowest at $2.21.

Note: Quarterly retail price data, including taxes, were averaged for 2019. A gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) is a unit of fuel that has the same amount of energy as one gallon of gasoline.
