Errata: This FOTW previously stated that China’s market penetration in 2018 was 8.1%, but the correct number was 4.5%. The text and graph below were updated on April 6, 2019.

The combined total of light-duty all-electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) sold in China in 2018 was over 1 million, or 4.5% of the light-duty vehicle market there. This compared to 386,000 plug-in vehicles sold in Europe and 361,000 plug-in vehicles in the United States – about 2% of the market in both places. Europe’s plug-in vehicle sales have been nearly equally split between EV and PHEV since 2015, while more EV than PHEV have been sold in China and the United States.

Sales of new electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by country/region (China, Europe, U.S.) from 2015 to 2018.
