In 2015, more than 18 billion tons of freight were moved in the United States, by several different modes. The total value of this freight was over $19 trillion. On-road shipping by truck represented about two-thirds of domestic shipping. About 10% of the freight tonnage was moved by rail, but rail only represented 4% of total freight value. Conversely, multiple-mode freight was 2% of freight tonnage, but 12% of the total value.
