Six outdoor connected lighting systems are installed in parking lots at the Corporate Research Center adjacent to Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) in Blacksburg, Virginia. Initial evaluations in this outdoor Living Lab focused on installation and configuration, as well as the presence-detection capabilities employed by the systems.

Ongoing evaluations assess system performance, maintenance, and monitoring capabilities, providing feedback to manufacturers regarding needed changes to sensors, systems, and reporting capabilities. A white paper in development will detail the outdoor sensor testing protocol developed by VTTI, document the current state of outdoor lighting sensor technologies, and provide recommendations for future action needed.
