The SunShot Prize Rules explain, in detail, how to become a registered participant, install qualifying PV systems, and submit results for official review.

The Challenge

Install a number of PV systems time efficiently during a set 18-month period that aggregates to minimum 10 MW (small system contest) or 15 MW (large system contest) with best scores for total capacity of systems completed in set time durations (repeatability), average permit-to-plug-in times and deviation (time performance), and the geographic diversity of completed systems (replicability).

Grand Prizes for Small System Contest

Install and connect to the U.S. grid a minimum total of 10 MW of solar PV with the following qualifying requirements:

  • PV system size must be between 1 kW and 100 kW
  • Permitting, installation, inspection, and grid interconnection should have started and ended during the set 18-month performance period
  • The permit-to-plug-in total time for 85% of all PV systems (in MW) that started and ended in the set 18-month performance period and located in your team-selected jurisdictions should be 56 days or less.
Grand Prizes for Large System Contest

Install and connect to the U.S. grid a minimum total of 15 MW of solar PV with the following qualifying requirements:

  • PV system size must be between 101 kW and 1 MW
  • Permitting, installation, inspection, and grid interconnection should have started and ended during the set 18-month performance period
  • The permit-to-plug-in total time for 85% of all PV systems (in MW) that started and ended in the set 18-month performance period and located in your team-selected jurisdictions should be 98 days or less.
Change Prizes

Change prizes are designed to support teams in their pursuit of winning either the small system contest or the large system contest. Even if teams are attempting to win both the small system contest and the large system contest, they are only eligible to receive a change prize for one contest. See details in the SunShot Prize rules.
