DOE is looking to fill a INTERDISCIPLINARY General Engineer/Physical Scientist position to support its IEDO portfolio. DOE has direct hire authority to fill the office’s energy scientific, technical, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) positions at the GS-11 through GS-15 grade levels. General engineers and physical scientists are the two positions at these grade levels most available within EERE. 

Direct hire authority allows DOE to hire faster than the traditional government hiring process does. In using this authority, DOE still abides by the Merit System Principles and all federal and DOE regulations for hiring.

Position Description 

  • This position serves as a principal advisor to Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) management on a broad range of topics, projects, and programs related to materials development, manufacturing, and characterization. 
  • Provides subject matter expertise in developing investment strategies, establish metrics, create research, development, and demonstration programs, evaluate grant applications, project budgets and scopes of work, and provides advice and recommendations to leadership. 
  • Develops and communicates technical content that guides and explains the RD&D strategy and its related portfolio and the connection to EERE mission. (e.g., writing reports for internal or external publication, memos and presentations for briefing leadership, and presentations for external audiences). 
  • Designs, plans, implements, and monitors a portfolio of activities that contribute to achieving EERE goals of decarbonization, energy efficiency, and manufacturing competitiveness. 
  • Develops, reviews, implements, and communicates project plans that direct the work undertaken by laboratories, contractors, and awardees.
  • Serves as a recognized authority in material development, manufacturing, and processing and provides advice to EERE and U.S. Department of Energy senior management in this area. 
  • Provides oversight to the Project Management of the assigned awards. 
  • Reviews and initiates modifications to project plans, contracts, grants, and agreements.

KSAs 

  • Mastery knowledge of, and skill in designing, processing, and manufacturing novel materials.
  • Expert knowledge of state-of-the-art materials, metallurgy, and processing (e.g., additive manufacturing).
