Energy Department Veteran Saves Electricity One Light Switch at a Time

Lighting makes up nearly 10% of the energy costs in our homes. But how many of us actually flip off the light switch when leaving the room? Over the past 16 years, Tien Nguyen, a veteran analyst in the FCTO who just retired, did just that every night before he headed home from work—saving roughly $200,000 and enough electricity to power 150 homes for one year in the process. Read the Energy Department's recent blog post, Energy Department Veteran Saves Electricity One Light Switch at a Time, to learn more about how one person can make a big difference when it comes to saving energy.

7 Award-Winning Clean Energy Inventions of 2016

When the R&D 100 Awards—also known as the "Oscars of Innovation"—were handed out, seven EERE-supported technologies invented by our national laboratories won awards in the fields of fuel cell technologies, vehicle technologies, and building technologies—including Argonne National Laboratory's porous nano-network catalyst, a revolutionary platinum-group metals (PGM)-free catalyst design.

Hydrogen: A Clean, Flexible Energy Carrier

Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant element on earth—it consists of only one proton and one electron. Hydrogen can store and deliver usable energy, but it doesn't typically exist by itself in nature and must be produced from compounds that contain it. To learn more and view the infographic, read the recent Energy Department blog post, Hydrogen: A Clean, Flexible Energy Carrier.
