The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) recently awarded the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2), led by Battelle, with an initial tranche of $30 million in federal funding—of the total project federal cost share of up to $925 million—to begin Phase 1 of its project plan. OCED and ARCH2 leadership will host a virtual briefing on August 16, 2024, at 12 p.m. ET to provide an overview of current project plans and engagement opportunities.

Over the coming decade, ARCH2 will work to reduce emissions and pollution that have long affected air quality in Appalachian communities. The hub intends to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 9 million metric tons per year—equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 2 million gasoline-powered cars. During Phase 1, which is expected to last up to 36 months, ARCH2 will conduct planning, analysis, and design activities in addition to ongoing stakeholder and community engagement across West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
