The Building Technologies Office conducted a healthcare energy end-use monitoring project in partnership with two hospitals. Here are a few highlights from monitoring chiller plant energy.

Chiller Energy

Annual site energy use intensities (EUIs) for chiller energy were estimated to be 27.7 kBtu/ft2-yr. for the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Gray Building and 26.8 kBtu/ft2-yr. for the State University of New York Upstate Medical University (SUNY UMU) East Wing.

Chiller Plant Energy

At the MGH Gray Building, the annual site EUI for total chiller plant energy was estimated to be 42.3 kBtu/ft2-yr.  This includes energy used by chillers, cooling tower fans, condenser water pumps, and chilled water pumps.
