Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) partners are made up of a diverse group of national laboratories, companies (for-profit and not-for-profit), state and local governments, and universities, but they all have one thing in common: they are working together to achieve common goals and drive innovation in manufacturing. While many of their achievements and contributions to the future of advanced manufacturing don’t gain the national spotlight, a number of partners, projects, and people were recognized throughout 2017 for their outstanding accomplishments.

Classroom to the Slopes: STEM Students Design Composite Snow Sleds
Last month, a group of University of Tennessee, Knoxville engineering students debuted and tested three prototype sleds they had designed with support and mentoring from the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI). The project was a holistic lesson in prototype development from start to finish and challenged students to innovate with a variety of different composite materials.

Lawrence Berkeley Lab Team Receives Prestigious Award for ISO 50001 R&D
The Industrial Applications Team at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is the recipient of the Lab’s prestigious 2017 Director’s Award for Exceptional Societal Impact Achievement, in recognition of its contributions to the development and advancement of ISO 50001, the global standard for energy management business practices.

ORNL Wins ACE Award for Bio-derived Pavilion
On December 12, 2017, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) won the Composites and Materials Expo ACE (Award for Composites Excellence) award for the Innovation in Green Composites Design category. ORNL’s submission was entitled Large Scale 3D Printing Using 100% Bio-Composite Materials. The award focused on the 3D printed bamboo-PLA pavilion designed/printed for Design Miami, an architectural expo, in Miami, FL.
