DOE’s IEDO Combined Heat and Power (CHP) R&D workshop was held in-person on May 19, 2023 in Washington D.C. immediately following the DOE’s Peer Review on May 16-18, 2023. The CHP workshop brought together industry, research, and government stakeholders to assess and identify key R&D challenges, priorities, and opportunities for CHP to enable further decarbonization across multiple industrial sectors. The CHP workshop began with IEDO providing the program overview, along with the vision, plans, and available resources to support further CHP innovations to enable improved energy efficiency and reduction in the carbon footprint across U.S. industrial operations. Additionally, the workshop included a panel session followed by focused breakout sessions for the following two main topic areas: (1) clean input CHP for industrial sites and (2) meeting electrical and thermal needs of industrial facilities.

The publications for this workshop include the formal invitation sent to select CHP stakeholders and the detailed workshop agenda. In addition, select presentations from both IEDO and the panel session participants are also included that cover the following topic areas:

  • IEDO’s CHP Portfolio Overview and Clean-input CHP presented by Emmeline Kao, IEDO’s CST subprogram Technology Manager
  • IEDO’s Overview on Load Balancing for Industry presented by Emmeline Kao, IEDO’s CST subprogram Technology Manager
  • CHP – Propane Industry’s Overview presented by Gokul Vishwanathan from the Propane Education and Research Council
