The Climate Adaptation & Resilience Plan lays out five priority actions to address climate change and increase adaptation and resilience.  In October 2021, DOE’s Sustainability Performance Division and the White House released Climate Adaptation & Resilience Plan –a first-of-its-kind plan to tackle this existential threat and  to support the requirements laid out in Executive Order 14008, Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad.

The Climate Adaptation & Resilience Plan affirms DOE’s commitment to managing the short- and long-term effects of climate change on the Department’s mission, policies, programs, and operations. This includes five priority actions:

  • Assess vulnerabilities and implement resilience solutions at DOE sites,
  • Enhance climate adaptation and mitigation co-benefits at DOE sites,
  • Institutionalize climate adaptation and resilience across DOE policies, directives, and processes,
  • Provide climate adaptation tools, technical support, and climate science information, and
  • Advance deployment of emerging climate technologies.

The Department will achieve these priority actions through several strategies, including reducing energy demand, increasing energy efficiency and grid modernization efforts, increasing the use of carbon pollution-free electricity, deploying innovative and promising sustainable and resilient clean energy technologies, and enhancing and deploying microgrids, distributed energy resources, and storage.

To deliver on these strategies, DOE sites and offices will conduct climate vulnerability assessments and develop resilience plans by September 30, 2022. These Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Plans will identify potential climate hazards and develop resilience solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The plans will be updated at least every four years and resilience solutions will be tracked annually to ensure that adaptation and resilience measures are continually incorporated. Check out the Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan Infographic  to learn more about the Department’s strategy for ambitious climate action!

The Climate Adaptation & Resilience Plan is a forward-looking plan that identifies and prioritizes the Department’s adaptation and resilience efforts to ensure we continue to meet our mission despite climate change impacts. As actions for this plan are implemented, we will continue to monitor and adjust our resiliency efforts in the years to come to respond to the ever-changing climate.
