NNSA's Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories support the nuclear Navy. Bettis, in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, provides design and engineering support for the NIMITZ Class aircraft carriers and the SEAWOLF Class fast attack submarines. It is the lead design laboratory for the reactor plant design effort for the next generation of aircraft carriers (FORD Class). Knolls, near Schenectady, New York, is the lead design laboratory for the newest VIRGINIA Class fast attack submarines and is leading the design effort on the next-generation ballistic missile submarine (COLUMBIA Class). Bettis and Knolls are part of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, which is operated by Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bechtel National, Inc.
