Tribal governments from across the country met in our nation’s capital to discuss a wide-range of nuclear energy activities within the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE).
The Nuclear Energy Tribal Working Group (NETWG) recently held its quarterly meeting at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) headquarters in Washington, D.C. DOE staff and NETWG members, representing 13 Tribes, addressed a variety of topics that included:
- Expanding STEM education and workforce opportunities for all generations
- Management, storage, and disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste
- Nuclear energy issues, including research and development
- Cultural resource management
- Small modular reactors
- Tribal outreach
- Nuclear Energy University Program.
Established in 2014, NETWG provides a unique forum for its members to share tribal perspectives and discuss matters of mutual interest to Tribes and NE. Its mission is to engage federally recognized Tribes in NE activities and assist in maintaining a government-to-government relationship.
The working group receives staff support from the National Conference of State Legislatures through a cooperative agreement with NE.
