The DOE HQ Shuttle Bus will be discontinued after November 22, 2022.  The HQ Rideshare Program will replace shuttle services between Headquarters office buildings.

Information on the HQ Rideshare program is available to DOE employees on the Department's EnergyHub and Powerpedia, both systems are only available to HQ employees that are actively logged onto a DOE network.

Shuttle Bus Route and Schedule

The DOE Shuttle Buses follow the same schedules between the two main Headquarters locations, Forrestal and Germantown.  The buses start their routes at each Headquarters facility at the same times, see the schedule below.  The subsequent stops at the other facilities are relative to the departure time of each route.

The shuttle bus departure and arrival times may be impacted by traffic, weather, or other logistical interruptions.

The bus stops are located at: 

  • Germantown - East side of Germantown building (cafeteria side)
  • 270 Corporate Center (20300 Century Boulevard) - Front entrance
  • Forrestal - Under the main entrance overhang located on 10th Street

Bus Transportation For Disabled Employees

Shuttle bus service for disabled employees traveling to or from L’Enfant Plaza or Portals Building will be made available upon request to the Transportation Office Manager.

When possible, disabled employees requiring shuttle bus service should provide the Transportation Office Manager with advanced notice, please contact (202) 586-6651.

Change in shuttle bus stops as of February 28, 2019

Effective February 28, 2019 the DOE Shuttle Bus discontinued the L’Enfant Plaza and Portals Building stops due to low ridership and construction zone parking difficulties.  Employees at L’Enfant Plaza and the Portals Building requiring shuttle bus service must use the Forrestal building bus stop.

Diesel Powered Buses

DOE Headquarters utilizes two 45 passenger diesel powered shuttle buses. The buses are equipped with WiFi. The buses run a 40-mile loop between DOE Headquarters, downtown Washington, DC and Germantown, MD locations.

Authorized Use of Shuttle Buses

Headquarters employees are reminded of the statutory provisions that authorize and limit the use of the shuttle bus service. Specific authority for the use of appropriated funds to pay for transportation for official purposes is contained in section 1344(a)(1) of Title 31, U.S. Code. Use of this transportation for any other purpose is inappropriate and against the law.

Headquarters Courier Services

The Transportation Team is responsible for providing courier services for the delivery and pick-up of DOE office material within the Washington Metropolitan area. Unclassified documents and packages requiring special messenger delivery within the Washington Metropolitan area are handled by the team during the following hours:

Courier Requirements:

  • Material or packages to be delivered to other Government sites must be brought to the appropriate room listed above.
  • Materials should be packaged using standard postal or interoffice packages.
  • Customer must complete applicable messenger request form.
  • Material will be delivered on the next scheduled messenger run.
  • Customers must pick up materials from appropriate room listed above.
