Administered through the Grid Deployment Office, the Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants program is designed to strengthen and modernize America’s power grid against wildfires, extreme weather, and other natural disasters that are exacerbated by the climate crisis.
The program will distribute funding to states, territories, and federally recognized Indian tribes, including Alaska Native Regional Corporations and Alaska Native Village Corporations, over five years based on a formula that includes factors such as population size, land area, probability of and severity of disruptive events, and a locality’s historical expenditures on mitigation efforts. Priority will be given to projects that generate the greatest community benefit providing clean, affordable, and reliable energy.
On May 5, 2023, the Grid Deployment Office (GDO) amended the Administrative and Legal Requirements Document (ALRD) to increase tribal formula grant allocations for fiscal years 2022 and 2023 to better account for the probability of disruptive events on tribal lands. The formula updates were made in response to improved use of available disaster data and increased the formula grant allocations for 243 tribes for FY22 and FY23. No formula grant allocations are reduced as a result of this update.
The amendment extended the deadline for Indian tribes to apply for funding to August 31, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Mail-in applications must have been postmarked by August 31, 2023.
Applications will continue to be processed on a rolling basis as they are received.
