The Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transition to 100% Renewable Energy (PR100) study webinar was held on January 23, 2023, and provided an update on progress made during the first year of this two-year, stakeholder-informed study.

The PR100 study led by the Department of Energy (DOE) is generating community-driven pathways to achieving resilient, reliable, and affordable electricity for all residents of Puerto Rico, which has committed to meeting its electricity needs with 100% renewable energy by 2050.

“Through the PR100 study process, we’re able to hear directly from Puerto Rican citizens and community leaders about the challenges and opportunities they face with respect to their electricity system,” said Agustín Carbó, Director of DOE’s Puerto Rico Grid Modernization and Recovery Team. “Working closely with government leadership in Puerto Rico, we are helping to identify and overcome impediments to rapid infrastructure deployment to provide the island with clean, reliable, and affordable power and to expedite current rebuilding activities. Leveraging our shared resources, we're able to incorporate lessons learned from renewable solutions that have already demonstrated resilience against impacts from extreme events like hurricanes and tropical storms.”

With funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through an interagency agreement with DOE’s Grid Deployment Office, PR100 is a stakeholder-informed study founded on community engagement and energy justice while leveraging the world-class expertise and infrastructure modeling capabilities of DOE’s National Labs, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The webinar featured remarks from Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, and Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi.
