As a science-based agency, the Department of Energy and its Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management play essential role in innovating a net-zero carbon economy. FECM’s Research & Development departments are the Office of Carbon Management and the Office of Resource Sustainability. These offices catalyze transformative growth of scientific research and the discovery and development of new carbon management and sustainability technologies.

FECM funds cutting-edge research and the deployment of innovative energy technologies like carbon capture and storage, hydrogen with carbon management, methane emissions reduction, critical mineral production, and carbon dioxide removal.

FECM also collaborates with the DOE’s 17 National Laboratories—a system of intellectual assets unique among world scientific institutions and serve as regional engines of economic growth for states and communities across the country.
