Interdisciplinary General Engineer/Physical Scientist (Direct Air Capture Hubs)

Duty Location: Remote

Office/Division Overview

The Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Removal (CDR) division provides Headquarters oversight, management, and direction for the Department of Energy’s research, development, demonstration, deployment activities. The division identifies research and technology issues and opportunities for direct air capture; direct ocean capture; biomass with carbon removal and storage; enhanced mineralization and weathering techniques, including opportunities from mine tailings and alkaline industrial wastes; and novel CDR concepts. This division is responsible for greenhouse gas (GHG) life cycle analysis (LCA) for CDR, including developing and informing methodologies for measurement, monitoring, and verification of GHG reductions. LCA is integral to ensuring the effectiveness of these approaches as tools for reducing atmospheric concentrations of CO2. Two Bipartisan Infrastructure Law positions will be filled using this vacancy announcement.

Job Description

The incumbent in this position will:

GS-11

  • Conduct technical analyses for direct air capture technologies.
  • Support the CDR division in preparation of technical and outreach materials for senior leadership.

GS-12

  • Conduct technical analyses for direct air capture technologies.
  • Apply project management tools and techniques.
  • Support the CDR division in preparation of technical and outreach materials for senior leadership.

GS-13

  • Conduct independent technical analyses for direct air capture technologies.
  • Apply project management tools and techniques.
  • Participate on direct air capture strategic and program planning teams.
  • Support the CDR division in preparation of technical and outreach materials for senior leadership.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with this position:

  • Skill in oral and written communication to communicate with a variety of departmental organizations, senior leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and techniques.
  • High degree of understanding of two-way engagement principles.
