WTP Contractor Earns More Than 80% of Award Fee at Hanford Site

EM’s Office of River Protection awarded Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) contractor Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI) approximately $6.5 million, or about 83% of the available fee, for work performed in calendar year 2022 at the Hanford Site.

Motor Specialist James Fuller replaces long strands of copper wire — a process known as motor rewinding — found within this electric motor for the EM program at Savannah River Site. Motor rewinding is a maintenance skill difficult to find in the U.S. workforce, according to Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

Pursuing Unique Skills to Rewind Cold War Motors at Savannah River Site

Maintaining safety systems at a 70-year-old DOE site can pose challenges, but the motor shop for the EM program at Savannah River Site (SRS) has successfully addressed them.

EM workers safely removed three shield windows with a combined weight of 75,675 pounds from the Main Plant Process Building at the West Valley Demonstration Project. EM and prime contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV) recently removed three shield windows that together weigh more than 75,000 pounds from a former cell in the Main Plant Process Building.

One Hanford Contractors Collaborate on Emissions Sampling

Hanford Site contractors from the EM Office of River Protection and Richland Operations Office recently shared valuable experiences with one another regarding sampling emissions from site exhaust stacks.

Security Police Officer Ryan Brady, a Centerra canine handler at Savannah River Site (SRS), and his canine, “Dogo,” conduct an explosives search on a vehicle at the United States Police Canine Association Region 2 Spring Detection Trials. The SRS canines are trained to sit when they detect the odor of potential explosive materials and are rewarded with a toy after a successful detection.

Dozens of Canine Teams Converge on Savannah River Site for Certification Trials

The award-winning Savannah River Site (SRS) Canine Program recently helped host 41 teams from South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina as they participated in annual trials of the nation’s oldest and largest police K-9 organization.

Workers with contractor Washington River Protection Solutions performed additional maintenance and repairs inside the Tank-Side Cesium Removal System during a planned outage before resuming treatment of tank waste at the Hanford Site.

Hanford Resumes Tank Waste Processing

The EM Office of River Protection (ORP) and contractor Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) have resumed processing tank waste through the Tank-Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) System at the Hanford Site following a second, planned maintenance outage.

Recipient of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board’s (DNFSB) Victor Stello Jr. Award for Safety Leadership, Robert Nelson died in December. Nelson’s wife and sons accepted the award on his behalf.

Victor Stello Jr. Award for Safety Leadership Given for First Time in 13 Years

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) recently posthumously awarded its Victor Stello Jr. Award for Safety Leadership to former EM employee Robert Nelson, the first recipient of the award since 2010.
