On July 30, 2018, the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) issued a request for information (RFI) on test facilities supporting offshore wind energy research and development. The RFI closed on September 14, 2018.

The stated purpose of the RFI was to solicit feedback from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues related to national offshore wind test facilities. Through a series of questions, WETO requested information on:

  • The facilities in the United States that are available for offshore wind-specific experimentation and testing
  • Facilities upgrades or new facilities that are required in the United States for offshore wind testing in order to perform cutting edge research and development (R&D)
  • The most pressing R&D-related testing needs that would utilize existing, upgraded, or new U.S. offshore wind-specific test facilities.

This report includes a compilation by WETO, in summary form, of key information received in responses to the RFI.
