Announcement: Funding Opportunity Announcement: DE-FOA-0000848 - Marine and Hydrokinetic System Performance Advancement
Issue Date: 4/22/2013
Total Award Money: $4,400,000
FOA Objective: FOA Objective: Advance technology performance of existing marine and hydrokinetic systems through the development and application of innovative components that are designed and built specifically for MHK applications will focus on improving the cost competitiveness of systems already in development.
Description: The Energy Department selected Dresser-Rand to advance technology performance of existing marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) systems through the development and application of innovative components that are designed and built specifically for MHK applications. Dresser-Rand designed, built, and tested a full-scaled (500-kilowatt) version of a high-power density, bidirectional radial HydroAir turbine. The use of a radial design (versus axial) reduced turbine size and, as a result, cost. The HydroAir turbine is a crosscutting component that can provide any type of oscillating water column device with a power take-off.
Areas of interest supported by the funding included:
- Advanced Controls to improve energy capture, availability, and safety Next-Gen Power
- Take-Off (PTO) to increase energy efficiency, reduce weight, and improve reliability
- Optimized Structures to improve energy capture, reduce weight, and improve reliability
