The Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) has three openings in the areas of hydropower engineering, economics, and power system modeling through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellowship Program. The fellows will support the office's HydroWIRES (Water Innovation for a Resilient Electricity System) initiative, whose mission is to understand and support hydropower's role in a 100% clean energy future. As full members of the WPTO team, the fellows will both learn and contribute across the range of activities associated with managing applied research.

The three fellowship opportunities include:

Hydropower and Power System Modeling Fellow

  • The ideal candidate will possess power system modeling expertise relevant for energy generation and storage resources, including capacity expansion models, production cost models, and/or stability and power flow models.

Hydropower Valuation Economist Fellow

  • The ideal candidate will possess economics expertise, with an advanced degree in economics or closely related field preferred. Experience in technoeconomic analysis or energy generation and storage asset valuation and finance is a plus.

Hydropower Engineering Fellow

  • The ideal candidate will possess mechanical or electrical engineering expertise specific to energy generation and storage resources, including component- or system-level design of hydropower plants, renewable energy integration, or power system operations.
