Partnered with NETZSCH, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed an Isothermal Battery Calorimeter (IBC) used to quantify heat flow in battery cells and modules. This specially designed calorimeter can perform precise thermal measurements at new levels of accuracy and functionality. Precisely measuring heat generation helps optimize battery thermal management systems to extend battery life and improve safety at an affordable cost. Entry to the market for this technology couldn’t be timelier, as it follows a 70% year-over-year jump in plug-in electric vehicle sales. NREL and NETZSCH received a 2013 R&D 100 Award in recognition of the IBC technology, which will help auto manufacturers create safer, more efficient batteries.
