This project allows EdgePower to enhance its building energy management technology that integrates solar forecasting and load control tools, which was developed under a Technology to Market award, by adding battery storage control capabilities. The prototype under development will establish standardized communication protocols between the building energy load gateway, the PV system, the energy storage system, and the solar forecast server. The integration of battery storage control capabilities will allow facilities with commercial solar to reduce their demand charges, making solar energy a more affordable option for businesses.

APPROACH

The project team is conducting its prototype in two different environments – one in a laboratory and the other at a commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) host site. The team will incorporate building load control algorithms into its existing load control gateway and will interface with existing solar PV system forecast data. Project funding will be used for firmware development, building-level solar forecasting improvements, a demonstration pilot, and a commercialization plan.

INNOVATION

This project will deliver a commercially-relevant prototype with proven real-world value to facilities with commercial solar. The goal is to scale the developed technology to fleets of buildings and accelerate the deployment of a combined technology solution that includes energy storage.
