The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) 50001 Ready program, managed by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office, recognizes U.S. advanced energy storage solutions manufacturer Clarios for attaining 50001 Ready status at its Meadowbrook facility in Holland, Michigan. 50001 Ready provides a self-paced, no-cost way for organizations to build a culture of structured energy improvement that leads to deeper and more sustained energy savings.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certified, Clarios Meadowbrook Lithium Ion facility, is the company’s first facility in the United States to achieve 50001 Ready recognition. The facility leveraged its past experience with DOE’s Better Plants program and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System to implement a data-driven energy management approach focused on continuous improvement.

“Previously, we focused on energy consumption as simply a metric. 50001 Ready has shown us ways to think outside the box and dig for the savings that we may have thought were not achievable,” said Shellie Ritsema, Environmental Supervisor and Energy Management Representative for the Clarios Meadowbrook Lithium Ion facility.

For Clarios, adhering to the energy management requirements of 50001 Ready has resulted in lower energy bills and operational costs through a more systematic approach to equipment maintenance and greater efficiency of core processes, particularly in the face of production variability. Use of the 50001 Ready Navigator online software tool engaged teams and enhanced recognition of the value of monitoring and improving energy performance. With the ability to analyze the entire facility’s energy use and equipment performance data, plant controllers and operators are now able to diagnose infrastructure problems quickly and coordinate actionable steps to optimize system performance.
