Funding Type: Solutions to Improve the Energy Efficiency of U.S. Small and Medium Commercial Buildings (DE-FOA-0001385)

The Institute for Market Transformation will partner with local chambers of commerce to help small business landlords and tenants improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. The project will use a business-to-business (B2B) model recently piloted in Cleveland, Ohio. The model will drive the uptake of energy assessments, implementation of energy conservations measures, green leasing, and energy efficient tenant spaces for more than 400 leased buildings.

The project will demonstrate a model for small-medium commercial building efficiency. The Institute for Market Transformation will work with local chamber of commerce to audit 400 buildings, starting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Traverse City, Michigan; and Cleveland, Ohio. At least five green leases will be executed, issuing energy and environmental business practice requirements for leasing. The Institute will engage 5-10 more local chambers of commerce by the end of three years using model documents, case studies, and best practices. These new chambers of commerce will continue to improve energy efficiency in buildings of small businesses.
