Dr. Anthe George is Senior Manager of the Applied Biosciences and Engineering Group within the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense and Energy Technologies Center at Sandia National Laboratories. She helps set strategic directions in the areas of bioresource conversion and stewardship. Dr. George also manages Sandia’s portfolio of work for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), serving as Sandia’s Lab Relationship Manager to BETO.

Since joining Sandia in 2009 as a postdoctoral researcher, Dr. George has helped spearhead several multipartner, multidisciplinary projects in the area of renewable fuels. She served on the leadership team for the Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines initiative, which is jointly sponsored by DOE’s BETO and the Vehicle Technologies Office. As scientific lead in the Deconstruction Division’s Biomass Pretreatment and Process Development Team at the Joint BioEnergy Institute, Dr. George focuses on understanding the mechanisms of lignin breakdown under different environments and the interactions between lignin and ionic liquids.

Dr. George has served on multiple national and international advisory boards and received an honorary research fellowship at Imperial College London. An accomplished research scientist, she has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and has been awarded several honors and patents.

An international scholar, Anthe studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques, France, and holds undergraduate and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Imperial College London.
